The most important quality a blade must have is the ability to cut cleanly and with little effort. In general I find that thinner blades cut better than thicker blades. I take this to an extreme with my machetes, many of which are made of 1/16" thick steel. Because of the premium, high strength steels that I use, the blade can be made thin, improving the cutting ability because of a smaller cross section and higher blade speed.
Machetes are made from ATS-34, CPM S35VN and S7. ATS is a excellent steel that has a proven track record while S35VN is one of the newer steels available. ATS has a great balance of toughness, edge holding, cost and stain resistance. Most of my machetes are ground from ATS.
S7 is not stainless. It is one of the toughest steels available, easily out performing all other knife making steels in impact toughness. It's durability is unquestioned.
